Jean Carruthers
Canadian ophthalmologist who, with dermatologist Alastair Carruthers, first reported the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin after a blepharospasm patient noticed her frown lines had gone.
Dr Jean Carruthers is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia and, with her husband Dr Alastair Carruthers, the originator of the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin.
The observation came from a patient being treated for blepharospasm in 1987, who noticed that forehead injection had removed her frown lines and asked for the effect to be repeated. The Carruthers investigated it deliberately and presented the glabellar findings in 1991; FDA approval for moderate-to-severe glabellar lines followed in 2002.
She has authored over 300 peer-reviewed papers and nine textbooks, and bibliometric analysis places her and Alastair Carruthers at the top of the aesthetic botulinum toxin literature by both output and citation.
